Organizational Behavior: Creating Effective Teams #1

"Building an Effective Teams"

For this assignment, I chose a topic I'm passionate about called "Building Effective Teams." From now on I will carry out research on this topic and in my next posts, I will be sharing with you the summary of each reviewed resource and some comments to discuss what I have learned.

Summary

Building an effective team requires more than just bringing together a group of talented people. This first article studied outlines some key steps in building and maintaining a strong, cohesive, and successful team.

First of all, it is essential to clearly define the objectives of the team and the result that is expected to be achieved. This includes figuring out what needs to be done and improving or adjusting some processes along the way. The basis for effective teamwork is the creation of a clear and motivating vision, which guides the team through a path full of challenges.

Also, to build a high-performing team, it's important to choose people who are excited about the goal, feel their contributions matter, and are motivated to do their best. So too, it's crucial to bring together people with complementary talents, different perspectives,
and personalities who can get along well with each other while also being able to lift each other up when necessary.

Once the team is formed, the next step is to break the vision down into more compact and achievable activities and goals. An action plan should be created with agreed due dates, success stories to share, and roles assigned to each team member. The position and responsibility of each team member must be clearly defined. In addition, the resources needed, including time, money, materials, space, and assistance, must be considered.

Another important point is to establish a code of conduct so that the entire team knows what is expected of each of its members. In turn, communication standards should be established, contributions valued and encouraged, disagreements handled constructively, and team choices and input respected. Clear expectations from the start ensure that each member will act appropriately.

Finally, it is important to celebrate or reward individual and team achievements to keep morale high and motivate continued positive contribution.

Teams can improve their efficiency and teamwork and, as a result, achieve their common goals by adhering to these guidelines.

My comments

It has been interesting to deepen our knowledge by reading this article. I consider the first point about transmitting clear and motivating objectives very important. During my years of work, I heard the following phrase on several occasions:
"We must delimitate the field", this phrase was used in the sports field, however, it was used by some leaders in the company where I worked. This meant that we should be able to clearly convey our current location and where we wanted to go, in addition to indicating in advance the risks or threats they would face and what would be achieved to achieve the objective. I believe that people are more committed and feel part of a team when they fully know what they want to achieve when they embrace the goal and make it their own when they can align the work goal with their personal goals.

I hope you enjoyed the read. See you in the next post.

  1. I truly enjoyed reading your post Georgina. While it shares your technical views on what it entails to build effective teams, it also conveys your emotional involvement in the matter, which adds further effect on your audience.

Your post does a heck of a job breaking down the “must haves” every successful team should be comprised of, detailing what is expected from each of its members, and at the same time clarifying that the organization itself should play its contributing role in the game, by ensuring communications to the team members are handled in an appropriate fashion.

An important reference is made to having a code of conduct in place, which I consider also a crucial component of team’s success, as it clearly outlines in a written format the rules of the game, so again, excellent and well written post.
