Organizational Behavior: Creating Effective Teams #5

"Trusting Teams: The 5 Practices"

In this video, Simon Sinek emphasizes the importance of trusting teams to build successful organizations. He begins by describing his experience at the Four Seasons Hotel, where he observed people who really enjoyed their jobs. According to Sinek, the main differentiator is the level of trust within the organization. When people feel safe, they can be vulnerable and trust their leaders and colleagues.

Sinek contrasts the Four Seasons environment with another workplace, Caesar's Palace, where employees just go through the motions and don't feel comfortable with each other. He emphasizes that leadership plays an important role in creating the employee experience and, consequently, the quality of customer service.

The speaker criticizes the common assumption of trying to get the most out of staff by comparing them to wrung-out towels. Instead, he proposes a more effective strategy of cultivating an environment in which people can naturally excel. According to Sinek, trusted teams are defined by psychological safety, in which people can admit mistakes, seek support, and express concerns without fear of humiliation or retaliation.

Using the example of the United Airlines incident, Sinek explains how a lack of trust and leadership contributed to the crew's failure to intervene and prevent the mistreatment of a passenger.

Sinek indicates that it is the responsibility of the leader to establish an environment that fosters trust and care for the people in his charge. Also, the ultimate goal is to build teams that support, value, and care for each other, which will result in better performance and customer satisfaction.

Sinek also points out that building reliable equipment is an ongoing process similar to going to the gym. In addition, it requires constant effort, commitment, and the understanding that the process is different for each person.

Finally, it indicates that there is no magic formula or quick solution; rather, it is a leadership lifestyle.

My comments

I truly believe that trust is truly the magic ingredient that fuels the success of any team and that it has the power to create effective team dynamics. When trust is present, it ignites a spark of enthusiasm and a genuine connection between team members.

In addition, I think that trust has the ability to inspire collaboration. That when trust is deeply embedded in a team, communication flows effortlessly. As members of a trust-based team, we may be able to actively listen, provide constructive feedback, and engage in healthy discussions. In turn, this spirit of collaboration breeds innovation and enables us to solve problems more effectively. Together, we can make better decisions and achieve extraordinary results.

So, I invite you to travel on the path of building trust with enthusiasm and passion in each of the teams to which you belong at this time or in your future workplaces. I encourage you to leave a legacy of trust, where every member of your team can succeed and reach their full potential.

Keep enjoying this wonderful learning.

  1. Dear Georgina,

This issue is essential for organizations. I want to highlight that in this video, Simon Sinek analyzes the importance of trust in teams and its impact on the success of organizations. Additionally, compare the positive work environment at the Four Seasons Hotel, where confidence and pleasure in work are high, with the less comfortable atmosphere at Caesar's Palace. The speaker emphasizes that leadership plays a crucial role in building trust and fostering an environment where people feel safe and trust their leaders and colleagues. He emphasizes the importance of continuous effort and commitment from leaders to build trust and supportive teams, leading to better performance and customer satisfaction.

  2. Hello Georgina,

I really liked this article. I honestly believe trust among the team, helps to increase productivity, efficiency and lower rotation in a company. This is key for "being part of" a company. I agree with Sinek's thought about leaders being responsible of building a trustful team. I also agree with you when you mention that trust inspirate collaboration. Even if one of the employees does not show the same mindset, it will disturbe a whole team that has been built on this path. Thanks for sharing this article and your thoughts.
